Fatehpur Sikri is one of the best places to add to an Agra itinerary if you have enough time to look beyond the Taj Mahal.

Don’t treat Fatehpur Sikri as a quick stop beside the Taj Mahal.
It is a separate sightseeing destination outside central Agra. You need to allow time for the journey as well as at least a couple of hours to explore the main complex properly.

The District Agra tourism information currently places Fatehpur Sikri approximately 36–40 km west of Agra and lists the site among the city’s major heritage destinations.
Why Visit Fatehpur Sikri?
The Taj Mahal and Fatehpur Sikri offer very different experiences.
The Taj Mahal is dominated by one monumental structure.
Fatehpur Sikri is more like walking through an entire historic city.
You move between courtyards, palaces, audience halls, religious buildings, gateways and residential spaces. That makes the visit particularly interesting if you want to understand more about the Mughal period rather than simply photograph another monument.
Another reason to visit is the architecture.
The buildings combine different influences, and UNESCO recognizes the site for the way Persian, Islamic and indigenous architectural traditions come together.

A Short History of Fatehpur Sikri
Fatehpur Sikri was developed under Emperor Akbar during the 1570s.
Akbar established his imperial center here, and the city became the Mughal capital for roughly a decade.
The complex included royal residences, administrative buildings, religious structures and public spaces.

How to Reach Fatehpur Sikri
From Agra
For most travelers, Agra is the easiest base.
The road journey is approximately 40 km and generally takes around 1–1.5 hours, depending on your starting point and road conditions. Your actual travel time can vary, so don’t build your itinerary around an exact minute-by-minute journey.
A private car is convenient if you want to decide when to leave and how long to stay.

My advice
If you are staying in Agra, I would rather see you spend a relaxed three hours at Fatehpur Sikri than rush through it in 45 minutes simply to add another attraction to your list.
From Jaipur
Fatehpur Sikri can be particularly convenient if Jaipur is your next destination.

you can plan:
Agra → Fatehpur Sikri → Jaipur

It may be possible, but “possible” and “comfortable” are not the same thing.

You don’t need to memorize every building before arriving.
For a first visit, concentrate on the major monuments and take time to understand how the buildings connect with each other.
1. Buland Darwaza
Buland Darwaza is the monumental gateway and one of the most recognizable structures at Fatehpur Sikri.
The scale is impressive, but don’t just take your photograph and leave.

Khwabgah is associated with Akbar’s private quarters.

10. Other Palace Buildings
If you have three or four hours, don’t worry about following a rigid checklist.
Walk slowly through the complex.
Look at the courtyards.
Notice the columns, stonework, doorways and relationship between buildings.
This is where Fatehpur Sikri becomes more than a list of monuments.

For most first-time visitors, I recommend 2–3 hours for the main sightseeing.
If you are interested in photography, architecture or detailed history, give yourself 3–4 hours.
That is sightseeing time only.

The cooler months are generally more comfortable for walking around the complex.
October to March is usually a good period for sightseeing.
During the hotter months, an early visit is much easier than walking around the exposed complex in the middle of the day.

But you should avoid adding five or six other attractions on the same day.
From Delhi
It becomes much more demanding.

and potentially Agra Fort or other stops.
For a first-time traveler, I would normally prioritize the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort before adding Fatehpur Sikri to a very short Delhi day trip.

Fatehpur Sikri on the Way from Agra to Jaipur
This is one of my favorite ways to plan the visit.
If Jaipur is already your next destination, Fatehpur Sikri doesn’t have to become an extra return journey.
You can simply make it part of the route.
For example:
Agra hotel → Fatehpur Sikri → sightseeing → Jaipur
